"The Monkey Mother is a mirror-imaging whirl of legend and contemporary life, performed by three evocative, skillful actors... "
(Pamela Payne - The Sun Herald)

The Monkey Mother began in 1998 as a creative development project funded by the Australia Council. In October 2000, The Monkey Mother premiered its first professional production (again funded by the Australia Council).

The Monkey Mother continues Citymoon's exploration of new movement vocabularies - drawing upon contemporary performance practice, mime, voice, martial arts, (especially kung fu and qi gong) and traditional Vietnamese performance styles to create an exciting and dynamic production that celebrates new directions and new expression in contemporary intercultural performance.

The Monkey Mother is a poetic and highly physical play about the pressures for change in a traditional Vietnamese family. It explores issues of immigration and adaptation to a new culture, identity shifts and compromise as individuals negotiate new relationships with each other. In the end, the concerns of The Monkey Mother are not just the Migrant Experience, but ultimately the Human Condition itself.

In June 2000, the script of The Monkey Mother was published by Playlab, as part of a trilogy of plays by Asian Australian playwrights.

The Monkey Mother was performed at PACT Theatre, Erskineville Sydney Australia in October 2000, and at Fairfield School of Arts, Fairfield, Sydney Australia in November 2000.
